Facebook viewership 'up 2,000%'
4 October 2007
The number of UK visitors to social media website Facebook has increased by more than 2,000 per cent in the past year, it has emerged.
Figures from traffic analysis firm comScore show 18.3 per cent growth in August to reach nearly nine million unique viewers.
This takes the online property's overall annual growth to 2,167 per cent since September 2006.
According to comScore, this may be due to a wider availability of the service as the general public may now sign up for the website.
The widening of admission criteria represents "a change from the previous policy requiring a valid email address from a university or a selected group of secondary schools and businesses", comScore explains.
Among the major search engines, Google had the widest reach, arriving on 88.8 per cent of computer screens.
Microsoft sites were seen by 83.8 per cent of web users, while Yahoo! reached 65.9 per cent of individuals.
The web analysis firm noted a "wave of German visitors" increasing traffic to online commerce sites from the country over the course of August.
