Youth market favours Facebook over MySpace

The latest internet traffic statistics have shown that social-networking market leader MySpace is in fact less popular with the key 17-25 demographic than rival social media site Facebook.
Research conducted by market analysts Youth Trends found that Facebook ranked as the most popular site among the 17 to 25-year-old age group during October, with over 50 per cent of females and over one third of males listing it as their favourite web site.
"For the first time ever, Facebook was ranked number one among both men and women," "Based on the findings, Facebook is more than likely to be their first visit of the day," said Youth Trends' Josh Weil.
The analysis also shed further light on youth demographics, with MySpace the second favourite site among young women, but only the sixth such site for men of the same age. Search engines Google and Yahoo! and video-sharing site YouTube all ranked above the News Corp subsidiary in the male survey.
Last month it was revealed that lecturers at UK universities are concerned that the growing popularity of Facebook among the nation's students was resulting in more and more "institutionalised gossip" about tutors being posted on the site.
